Business Boom hits again

More businesses are coming to the ever growing Wilkes-Barre Twp. Smokin' Joes Tobacco Shop and Dollar Tree Discount stores are currently in the making in the Blackman Plaza near the K-Mart on Wilkes Barre Twp Blvd.(Business Route 309).  Construction on the hotels in the area of the Wachovia Arena are in full bloom all businesses are expected to open by Novemeber 2009

Wilkes Barre Twp to Start Youth Program

Mayor Carl Kuren has initiated a special youth program for those who are willing to help the township’s seniors during the winter with shoveling snow and in the summer with mowing their lawns.The mayor has two lists: one for youths who would be interested in helping out seniors and the other for seniors who would like to sign up for this service. The seniors would negotiate a rate and be responsible for compensating the youth.As an added incentive to the youth, Kuren stated he would provide them with a Wilkes-Barre Township youth service T-shirt and also allow them private trout fishing after the annual kids’ fishing derby at the Settlement Camp.Any youth interested in signing up is asked to stop by the municipal building between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and see Evelyn Craig, program moderator, to have his/her name, address and phone number placed on the list.Seniors requesting the service are asked to call Craig at 208-4635, ext. 251, or they can stop by the municipal building.


"Spirit of Service~Volunteer Today"

President Barack Obama encourages all people to get out and volunteer.  All volunteer fire departments are in need of volunteers whether it may be becoming an active member or a social member. Anyone who is 18 years of age or older and is wishing to become a memberof Station 188 should stop by the fire house between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to obtain an application.



Businesses to be Coming Soon

Several businesses will be added into our coverage area.A Sonic Drive through restaurant will be built at the location of the former KFC. Construction on the restaurant will begin in February ad the project is expected to be finished in May or June. As well as the Sonic, a Walgreens Pharmacy is in the making at the site of the former PNC Bank and Super China Buffet on Coal St. and Business Rte 309. To add to the ever growing boom of businesses in the township plans for several more hotels in the area of the Wachovia Arena are in full go.


Wilkes Barre Twp Fire/Rescue Receives State Grant

The Wilkes Barre Twp Vol. Fire Dept. receive a state grant in the amount of $9,500.00. This grant was funded through the 2008-09 Volunteer Fire Company Grant program through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.

Help Our Fellow Firefighters

Bear Creek Township  firefighters noticed during an emergency that life saving equipment was stolen  Three saws were reported missing from a fire apparatus vehicle. Firefighters noticed the missing saws while at the scene of an accident and attempting to remove a person entrapped inside a vehicle on Sunday. The saws - a Stihl model TS400, a Stihl chainsaw model MS460 and a Milwaukee reciprocating saw, are black and engraved with Bear Creek. The saws were taken sometime after Nov. 15 Anyone with information about the equipment is asked to contact state police at Wyoming at 697-2000.
